A Dubai restaurant was shut down and seven gyms and a retail outlet were fined for flouting Covid-19 safety measures as part of an ongoing campaign against rule-breaking businesses in the emirate.

The unnamed eatery was hit with a closure order following a spot check by the Department of Economic Development (Ded) in partnership with Dubai Tourism.

The breaches were discovered during a round of inspections in Al Quoz, Al Sabkha, Al Nahda and Business Bay on Sunday.

The businesses were punished for failing to apply physical distancing or ensure employees wore masks as mandated.

Coronavirus outbreak

Three more firms were given warnings for not displaying physical distancing stickers.

Officials found 853 shops and commercial premises were fully compliant with regulations during the daily monitoring operation.

Authorities have called on companies to adhere to strict precautionary laws implemented to protect public health.

Covid-19 cases have been on the rise across the Emirates in recent weeks and have averaged more than 1,000 per day so far this month.

Dubai Economy urged members of the public to report those failing to comply with Covid-19 laws through the Dubai Consumer app, by calling 600 54 5555 or by visiting this website
