Aden - Yasmine El Tohamy - The mosaic artwork - developed over a period of one month - depicts the evolution of the UAE.

A mosaic artwork measuring 1,015 square metres - around the size of two basketball courts - has now become the 'world's largest mosaic made from recycled materials'. It was built using 90,000 recycled waste materials, including plastic bottles, cans and pieces of cardboards generated from Abu Dhabi.

Masdar City, Abu Dhabi's flagship innovative and sustainable urban development, clinched the title, making its way into the Guinness World Records.

The mosaic artwork - developed over a period of one month - depicts the evolution of the UAE and highlights the landmarks of the seven emirates.

Masdar City employees, tenants and residents, as well as members of the wider Abu Dhabi community and schoolchildren,  joined hands to complete the project.

The aim of the mosaic, which was officially unveiled ahead of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2020 beginning on January 11, is to encourage UAE citizens, residents and visitors to take more responsibility for their impact on the environment and inspire them to reduce, reuse, and recycle their waste.

Representatives from Guinness World Records presented Masdar City with the official record certificate in a special ceremony, attended by Masdar City executives and government officials.

"It is exciting to have this world record - the largest mosaic made up of waste materials - in the sustainability area. It depicts how much we can recycle wastes and protect the environment," Shaifali Mishra, adjudicator at the Guinness World Records, told Al Khaleej Today on the sidelines of the event.

Yousef Baselaib, executive director for sustainable real estate at  Masdar, said: "As a pioneer in sustainable urban community development, Masdar City will continue to lead in promoting best practices in waste management."

"This wonderful mosaic makes the sustainability debate more tangible and accessible through the universal medium of art. It demonstrates the commitment of the people of the UAE to protecting the environment. Sustainability requires everyone to play their part and engaging the local community is an essential element of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week."

Pierre Abboud, general manager of Trompe L'Oeil-UAE, which designed the mosaic artwork, pointed out: "It took us one month to assemble the recyclable items, including plastic bottles, cans and cardboards, to make this the world's largest mosaic. Since it's a drawing, the difficult part was to find the right colours. We had to match the colours of the materials to make the artwork beautiful."

The mosaic will be on display in Masdar City for a few months and can be viewed from the district's observation deck. The materials will later be removed and recycled.
