Apple has already published the list of devices that will be upgraded from macOS Big Sur.
You will need:
- MacBook models from early 2015 or later
- MacBook Air models from 2013 or later
- MacBook Pro models from 2013 or later
- Mac Mini models from 2014 or later
- iMac models from 2014 or later
- iMac Pro (all models)
- Mac Pro models from 2013 or later
If you have an older model of Mac, you just can’t upgrade to Big Sur. We are sorry!

Apple MacOS Big Sur Features – What’s New in MacOS 11?
The most important change is a major design redesign that Apple calls the biggest since macOS 10.
Said Apple, “macOS Big Sur has a spacious new design that simplifies navigation and gives users more controls.
“From the curvature of the window corners to the palette of colors and materials, everything has been refined, and new functions offer even more information and performance.
“The icons in the Dock have been carefully designed to be more consistent with icons across the Apple ecosystem while preserving their Mac personality.
“Buttons and controls appear when needed and step back when they don’t
“The entire experience feels more focused, fresher and more familiar, reducing visual complexity and bringing the user content to the fore.”

There’s a brand new Control Center, Notification Center and a new design for the most important Apple apps.
Safari got a big upgrade with faster performance and improved battery life for MacBooks.
Apple estimates that Safari now loads frequently visited websites 50% faster than Google’s Chrome browser.
Messages have been redesigned with pinned conversations, additional effects, and new group messaging features.

The redesigned Apple Maps of the iPhone are also coming to the Mac. They offer new features like instructions, a 360-degree view, and some indoor maps for places like airports and shopping malls.
According to Apple, there are also some major changes to privacy, including disclosing the types of data apps collect before you download them.
It is also marked whether this data is passed on to third parties for tracking.
