A look back at the best of the opening round of the Italian Open at Chervò Golf Club.

Laurie Canter carded the lowest lap of his career on the European Tour and opened a four-shot lead after the opening round of the Italian Open.

World # 227 fired an eagle and ten birdies on the way to a bogey-free 60 at Chervo Golf Club, where preferred lies were in operation to set a clubhouse goal no one came close to.

Joachim B. Hansen screwed four of his last five holes to close an eight under 64 and sat in second place with South African Dean Burmester, while Englishman Richard Bland was one of five players who finished fourth to seven under shared.

“It feels great,” said Canter. “The score, days like that, the last nine there, everything went well. I gave myself a few chances and it was just one of those days when you just have to enjoy the ride.

“I think it plays quite a long time and it definitely helps hitting it directly and I’ve been able to do that for most of this year so far. I like the golf course but I think obviously a lot of things went right today to help me shoot this. ”

Starting with the back nine, Canter took a 20-foot birdie on the 11th and rolled a par 3 in a 30-foot birdie on the 14th, with the Englishman reaching the turn in 31 from the 16th.

Canter made back-to-back birdies from the third and made a 15-foot eagle on the par-5 sixth before signing his flawless card by chasing a 5-foot win on the seventh by playing Shots from 25 feet were recorded on the eighth and 15 feet on the ninth.

Burmester also made a bogey-free start to get off the pace with Hansen four, and Bland shot back another shot alongside Adri Arnaus, Wil Besseling, Oscar Lengden and Damien Perrier.

Defending champion Bernd Wiesberger was the last to score an opening round 67, while Scott Jamieson carded a hole-in-one in the par-3 second to give him a four-under-68.
