Daniel Schwaab announced on Thursday that he would stop as a professional football player. The 32-year-old defender has played at PSV for the past four seasons.

In March of this year, Schwaab played his last game with FC Groningen-PSV (0-1), the last game before the Eredivisie was ended due to the corona crisis. Since then there has been enough interest from other clubs for the transfer-free German defender.

“There were certainly interesting offers from abroad. But in the end I was not convinced by anything”, says Schwaab Kicker.

“My family is important to me. The last two years I have been commuting between Eindhoven and Waldkirch (South West Germany, ed.). I didn’t want anything like that anymore.”

Schwaab played 382 league matches for SC Freiburg, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart and PSV. He won the national title with the Eindhoven team in 2018 and the Johan Cruijff Shield two years earlier. In Freiburg he became champion in the Second Bundesliga.

Schwaab wants to become a youth trainer

Schwaab wants to stay active in football. As a graduated economist, a board position is an option, but he currently prefers a job as a (youth) trainer.

He will follow a trainer course in Germany and do an internship at Freiburg. “In recent months I have been thinking carefully about the future. I am still attracted by the field, football remains my passion.”

“I would like to teach young players about the game, but also about the side issues that come with it nowadays.”
