Dutch Kiki Bertens avoided early exit from the French tennis championship, “Roland Garros”, after surviving a point of losing the match against Italian Sarah Irani, to reach the third round on Wednesday.

Bertens, ranked fifth, won the match with a score of 7-6, 3-6 and 9-7, after a fierce battle on the clay that lasted more than three hours, but she left the field in a wheelchair, after her Italian rival insulted her and refused to shake her hand after the match.

The match was not without controversy, as Bertens, who suffered from physical problems in the third set, needed to get a break, to ridicule Irani about her injury with a provocative move after winning a ball in the break.

After the match ended, Irani left the field without the usual handshake between the players at the net, and before she picked up her belongings, she shouted at her opponent in Italian: “Go, damn you.”

Upon hearing the insult, Bertens threw the racket to the floor, covered her face with a towel, and entered a crying fit while seated in her seat on the field.

And it did not end at this point, as the Dutch began to agonize over her seat and requested medical intervention, as she needed a wheelchair to leave the stadium, due to her suffering from psychological disorders as a result of the insult to which she was exposed, and also to her physical suffering after the great effort that she made in the match.

The “Roland Garros” organizers have not issued any statement or comment so far about the events of the Bertens match against Iran.
