It isn't totally unusual to see a professional footballer cheering on his teammates from the crowd if he is unavailable to play.

As for what Roma legend Daniele De Rossi has just done – now that is unheard of.

The Italian was at the Stadio Olympico at the weekend to cheer on the club he spent 18 years at before moving on to Boca Juniors in Argentina in May. He has since retired from the game.

But, given his status among the rival football fans in Rome, simply turning up with a ticket for the Roma-Lazio derby match wasn't an option.

Instead, he hired a make-up artist and was transformed into an unrecognisable figure.

His wife, Sarah Felberbaum, posted this video on her Instagram account showing the length De Rossi went to in order to hide his identity.

She commented alongside the video: "Here's what happens when your husband decides to infiltrate the south corner to fulfill his dream and see the derby! We lost an entire afternoon, hours of make-up, traumatised the children but he was happy as a child."

De Rossi, 36, made more than 600 appearances for Roma, and also represented Italy 117 times and won the World Cup in 2006.
