An industrial gas leak in eastern India is reported to have killed at least five people and sickened scores more on Thursday morning.

The leak occurred at the LG Polymers factory in Visakhapatnam, a port city in Andhra Pradesh state, according to the local municipal authority, which advised residents to stay indoors.

Video footage from local media and authorities showed people struggling to breathe, with some collapsing, and ambulances leaving the area.

Srijana Gumalla, commissioner of the the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, said the leak had reportedly caused five deaths and affected hundreds of people.

The municipality advised people living around the plant to leave the area and said that mist blowers were being used to clear the gas.

Ms Gummalla said initial reports suggested the gas was styrene, which can cause irritation of the skin eyes and upper gastro-intestinal tract.
