Toddlers escape the daycare in Gold Coast and run to the...

Two toddlers escaped a daycare on the Gold Coast that was trapped by passers-by just before they ran onto a busy street.

Amelia Finney’s daughter Skyla, who turned two Tuesday, is one of the two children, and said the Okee Dokee Coomera Rivers daycare center was unaware the children had fled the center.

“She got out through the back gate and went down Foxwell Road, which is where the main street is,” said Mrs. Finney.

“She was seconds away – she took a step from the gutter to try to go into the street.

“Obviously she doesn’t know.

“Then one [older] Girls or boys grabbed them and rescued them. I am so grateful for you.

“I wasn’t informed, I didn’t get a call until an hour later, and even then I couldn’t answer because I was at work.

“I thought they’d call my next contact, but they just didn’t do it at all.

“They didn’t know she was missing, they didn’t know the gate was open, they had no idea and that’s really scary.

“I asked them how two children can go out of their care and they didn’t see it.

“They said the gate was tampered with from the outside and she played around with it and got out, so I don’t understand.”

“We literally saved their lives”

Dashcam footage captures the moment the teenagers run down Foxwell Road before schoolchildren and another woman stop them.

Rondell Nicol posted the video on a local community’s page and said she was one of the groups that saved the children.

“We literally saved the lives of two babies today when they stepped onto the busy street near the Foxwell Road Finnegan Way roundabout,” she said.

“They went through an open gate on the Okee Dokee Coomera Rivers.

“The excuse from the staff was that they didn’t know the gate was open and they didn’t know where the babies were.

“The police were contacted and dashcam material was made available.”

Mother pulls Skyla out of the middle

Ms. Finney said Skyla will not be returning to daycare.

“They apologized very much, but I don’t think it is right that they got out and that I was not notified,” she said.

“It’s a main street, so for a two year old [get] on this road alone is very scary.

Amelia Finney says her daughter won’t be returning to daycare

“I am very concerned, it is very scary.

“I have no idea what happened, it’s very nerve-wracking to think about.

“There is an investigation that was also taken to the police.

“Hopefully no other child has to go out.”

An Okee Dokee spokeswoman said in a statement that an investigation was ongoing and the parents had been given advice.

“We are in the process of preparing an incident report for them [Education] Department, “said the spokesman.

“No child has been harmed.”

A Queensland police spokesman said they would investigate.

The education department was asked for a comment.

The Australian Childcare Alliance Queensland said it was unable to comment on an open and ongoing investigation.
