Born in 1954 in the Syrian capital, Sheikh Muhammad Adnan Al-Afiouni assumed the position of Mufti of Damascus and its countryside in 2013, in the midst of the popular uprising that tore the country apart.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Al-Afiouni “was one of the most prominent clerics close to the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and he played a pivotal role in the conclusion and implementation of the settlement agreements that the government concluded with the opposition and fighting factions in the countryside of the capital.”
On September 12, 2016, Al-Assad performed the Eid Al-Adha prayer at the Saad bin Moaz Mosque in the city of Daraya, in a rare public appearance at the time, about three weeks after the Syrian army took control of the city following an agreement with the opposition factions in it after its siege for more than four years. .
