WARNING: Worrying.

An African zoo was abandoned because it starved its animals and left them in dire conditions.

Research by a wildlife charity found that 98 percent of animals at the privately owned zoo in Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, had died of neglect and starvation.

The charity inspected the private zoo in West Africa, home to 47 wild animals, from lions to hippos, porcupines, monkeys, moose and hyenas.

The team was appalled to find that dozens of endangered species were hungry and weak due to malnutrition, and some animals died from lack of food.

Four lions, two hippos, a striped hyena, red-necked ostrich, turtles and elk had been starved for weeks and their health was in “dire” condition.

When inspecting the porcupines’ cage, the team smelled of “decay” as two animals had been locked away and rotted for weeks.

In the pictures, the starving creatures were given food by the investigation team – their first meal in weeks.

The charity [email protected] is an international non-governmental organization engaged in wildlife conservation, rescue and rehabilitation.

“When we inspected the porcupine’s cage, we both met in the final stages of death. The smell of decay was already there as they were locked and rotted for weeks, ”the team wrote.

An urgent fundraiser has been launched to keep the animals alive at a cost of $ 920 per week that will cover food, care and modest salaries for a small team of eight employees.

The team also hopes to get the Burkina Faso Fauna and Flora Conservation Association to conduct an emergency takeover and turn the zoo into an ethical nature reserve.
