Huawei Mate 40 Pro, Pro + and RS are presented with...

The Mate 40 Pro models are finally official and it was worth the wait. They will try to fight their way to the top of the “best camera” charts with their redesigned hardware jointly developed with Leica. But other elements of the phones have arguably received even greater upgrades.

Huawei Mate 40 Pro, Pro +

Still, let’s start with the camera on the Huawei Mate 40 Pro 5G. Huawei has a new 1 / 1.28-inch main sensor which, along with the P40 models, is the largest on the market. However, the resolution has been increased to 50 MP (from 40 MP) while maintaining omnidirectional autofocus and f / 1.9 lens with optical image stabilization (OIS). The pixel size is 1.22 µ, which doubles when binning is activated.

The main camera can record 4K videos at 60 fps as well as slow motion clips with a resolution of 1080p and 480 fps. You can practically stop the time with the 3,840 fps mode, which records at a resolution of 720p. The selfie camera is also very adept at recording video. It can record 4K / 60 video and 1080p / 240 slow motion clips, but we’ll get to that in a moment.

The second generation cine camera is equipped with a 20-megapixel sensor and a 1: 1.8 ultra-wide-angle lens. It is the world’s first mobile camera to feature a free-form lens that reduces the distortion characteristic of ultra-wide-angle lenses.

Huawei is bringing back the 125mm periscope lens in front of a 12 megapixel sensor. It offers 5x magnification over the main camera and is a significant upgrade over the 8-megapixel camera with 3x zoom on the Mate 30 Pro. It has an aperture of f / 3.4 and OIS, just like the P40 Pro.

We make a little detour to the Huawei Mate 40 Pro + 5G The zoom functions are the main difference between the two pros. The periscope lens offers up to 10x optical zoom. This module has an 8MP sensor and an aperture of f / 4.4, similar to the P40 Pro +. And just like that, it’s not alone – there’s a 12-megapixel camera for mid-range zoom that offers 3x magnification. A laser autofocus system enables quick and accurate focus locks.

Both versions of the Pro have a 13-megapixel front camera connected by a depth sensor. This sensor detects hand movements to control the EMUI 11 interface and also performs the tasks of unlocking the face. A fingerprint reader is also integrated in the display.

So the 6.76-inch OLED display is quite a jump from the 6.53-inch panel found on the 2019 phones. The resolution is increased to 1,344 x 2,772 pixels for a sharper image. The sides of the display are strongly curved and meet the side wall of the phone at an angle of 88 °. Despite the extreme curve, there are still hardware controls (power, volume) on the side (but virtual buttons are also available).

The refresh rate is set to 90 Hz, but is better than the P-series with a touch sampling rate of 240 Hz. The multimedia experience is further improved thanks to stereo speakers – the combination of 3D audio and vibration of the linear motor ensures an even more intense experience.

The battery department also received a major upgrade. Not in terms of capacity, it’s about the same size as last year at 4,400mAh, but it charges much faster now. If you’re using a USB-C cable, it can be up to 66W. It can deliver 50W wirelessly, faster than the Mate 30 Pro and P40 Pro, which are wired to charge. Of course, wireless reverse charging is also supported.

The flagships of the Huawei Mate 40 are powered by the latest Kirin 9000 chipset. It was manufactured in a 5 nm process and has four Cortex A77 cores, one of which is clocked at a record-breaking 3.13 GHz, and four A55 cores. The GPU is a Mali-G78 with 24 cores, which is the maximum possible configuration.

Of course there is also the integrated 5G modem. Local connectivity is lightning fast too. Wi-Fi 6+ can take up a bandwidth of 160 MHz – this corresponds to a transmission speed of a full 2.4 Gbit / s. You need the right router (and Huawei has one that will sell you), but that’s practically 5G speeds.

The Mate 40 series supports the new Huawei M Pen 2 pen. We also mentioned gestures, an alternative way to control the user interface: move your hands left / right to browse photos in your gallery, move up / down to flip through the pages of an e-book, move Your hand to answer a call or control the music player.

With the updated multi-screen collaboration feature, you can teleport an app from your phone to your PC. Unlike Microsoft’s Your Phone application (which almost exclusively supports Samsung phones), you can bring multiple apps to your laptop screen.

The Pro + uses ceramic materials available in white and black. This is updated to 12 GB of RAM while the memory remains at 256 GB. Both versions are available as dual SIM or single SIM phones (the Pro also has an eSIM).

With the Huawei Mate 40 Pro + you get 1,400 euros back.

Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS

The Porsche Design Huawei Mate 40 RS has a bespoke exterior from the famous design company. It’s also available in Ceramic White and Ceramic Black, but there’s no chance you’ll confuse it with the Pro +.

This is because Porsche Design has chosen a rounded octagon look for the camera island. As always, the vertical stripe in the middle, a trademark of PD phones, is back.

The RS model offers the best memory configuration (12 + 512 GB). Note, however, that this is a luxury product, which is why it has a luxurious price point of 2,300 euros.
