New Delhi, October 11th (IANS): Senior Indian and Chinese military officials will meet on Monday to discuss de-escalation at the Line of Effective Control (LAC) in east Ladakh as winter begins.

It would be the seventh round of discussions between the two countries at Corps Commander level.

On the Indian side, Lieutenant General Harinder Singh, who is ending his tenure as commander of the 14th Corps, and his successor, Lieutenant General PGK Menon, would chair the discussions. The joint secretary of the Foreign Ministry, Navin Srivastava, will also attend.

There was no escalation in the past month, but there was also no relaxation, sources said.

Temperatures at critical mountain peaks and passes along the controversial India-China border have plummeted to minus 20 degrees Celsius, creating a new challenge for the thousands of troops that have amassed from both sides in the region.

On August 30, India occupied critical mountain heights such as Rechin La, Rezang La, Mukpari and Tabletop on the southern shore of Lake Pangong, all of which were previously unmanned. India has also made some missions near Blacktop. The move came after the Chinese tried to take a provocative military move.

Dominance on these 13 peaks now enables India to dominate the Spangur Gap under Chinese control and also the Moldovan garrison on the Chinese side.

During previous Corps Commander-level talks, China insisted India abandon those strategic heights. It told India that it would not talk about withdrawing in East Ladakh, where the build-up of both sides over the past four months had sparked a warlike situation, until India abandoned these strategic positions.

High-ranking Indian and Chinese commanders held the 6th round of the military commanders’ meeting on September 21.

China’s PLA firmly believes that the situation on the south bank, where Indian forces are in the position of strength, must first be resolved tactically, but India strongly wants a roadmap for de-escalation across Ladakh to be drawn up.

India and China have a six-month break in the LAC. Despite several levels of dialogue, there was no breakthrough and the stalemate continues.
