Quote 500: Wagenborg brothers richest Drenthe again

It was a good year for Rob and Eric Wagenborg. The brothers saw their assets increase by about forty million euros last year. This is evident from the new Quote 500 of the business magazine Quote, where they occupy the 155th place on the list of the richest Dutch people, with an estimated capital of 280 million euros.

They gathered that wealth with their company Royal Wagenborg, known for the ferry services to Ameland and Schiermonnikoog.

Last year the duo was good for 240 million euros, but then there was a minus in front of their name. In 2018, the brothers made a loss of 16 million euros due to the ‘refinancing of outstanding debts’. That will have been amply polished away in 2020.

Shoes brothers

At places 376 and 415 we encounter two other Drents: Henk and Bert Ziengs. Henk’s assets remained the same compared to last year: 130 million euros. Bert fell sharply on the list He is now in place 415 with 120 million euros.

“For the first time in years, Bert did not hide his assets in Malta”, says Quote. “He filed again with the Chamber of Commerce this year. Because of this transparency we have to adjust previous estimates. His real estate portfolio turns out to be worth much less.”

Real estate queen

Large landowner Magreet Moret-Wessels Boer from De Schiphorst was no longer part of the list since last year and will not return this year. The lower limit of 95 million euros turns out to be too high for Wessels Boer, who was described by Quote as ‘the female Scrooge McDuck who owns half of the Northern Netherlands’. In 2018, the property queen was still in 468th place with an estimated net worth of 85 million euros.

Heineken

Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken, daughter of the late Freddy Heineken and heir to her father’s shares, is the richest Dutch person. Its assets are estimated at EUR 12 billion, about EUR 2 billion less than last year.

“The rich polonaise came to a rapid halt in 2020,” said Quote. Nevertheless, the balance sheets have become so heavy in recent years that there is little panic in the wealthy Netherlands. The native rich will not be immune to the virus, but for the time being their resistance is remarkably high.
